Prosecution orders detention of migrants in South Hungary camp violence

Budapest, January 18 (MTI) – Police have initiated the preliminary detention of fourteen refugees in connection with violence that broke out on Friday at the Kiskunhalas refugee camp, in southern Hungary, the Bacs-Kiskun County prosecutor told MTI.

On Friday three men held in migration detention at the camp started a fight with each other over the use of the internet. They were separated by security guards and police but a group of 20-25 other people held in detention pelted stones at the police, injuring two officers.

Laszlo Nanasi said the Kecskemet prosecutor has initiated the detention of the 14 foreign nationals for assault on police officers. He said the arrests were necessary because the suspects are considered flight risks due to the severity of the crime they are suspected of, adding that there is also a risk they may attempt to destroy evidence relating to the case.

The Kecskemet Court will rule on the suspects’ preliminary detention later on Monday, Nanasi said.

Gyorgy Bakondi, the prime minister’s domestic security chief advisor, said on Saturday that 180 police had to be sent to restore order at the refugee camp after the incident.
