Head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee meets Russian parliamentary delegation in Budapest

Budapest (MTI) – Zsolt Nemeth, head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee, met members of the foreign affairs committee of the upper house of Russia’s legislation in Budapest on Monday.

Following the talks, Nemeth told a press conference that though there might be differences in political positions, Hungary and Russia “have maintained a dialogue and cooperation” in recent years. He added that global conflicts cannot be managed without Russia’s involvement.

Participants in the meeting voiced hope that the Minsk process would be successful and the sanctions burdening international relations could be lifted, Nemeth said.

Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Russian committee, said there was no “unresolvable conflict” that would hinder cooperation between the two countries. He said he saw no major issue with the European Union, either, but noted that the EU “proceeds like a caravan in which the slowest camel sets the pace”.

Russia could do “a lot” to promote the Minsk agreement, which would ensure the rights of both the Russian and the Hungarian minorities in Ukraine, the Russian politician said.

Kosachev said it was important that Russia and the EU further develop their security and energy cooperation, and that Russia and Hungary, a NATO member, could together be instrumental in easing the tension in the Middle East.
