Partial refurbishment starts in Tokol prison after ombudsman report

Budapest, October 13 (MTI) – Acting on a report by the ombudsman slamming conditions in a prison near Budapest, part of the facility is being refurbished and conditions have improved, Magyar Nemzet reported on Tuesday.

In a July report the ombudsman, Laszlo Szekely, noted extremely poor conditions, including overcrowding, filth and physical punishments in the prison’s juvenile section.

Andras Csoti, the chief of Hungary’s prisons, ordered an on-site investigation in the Tokol prison located just south of Budapest. Accordingly, the prison was instructed to carry out refurbishments and an expansion as well as to improve hygienic conditions, the paper said, adding that the physical disciplining of inmates has been suspended.
