President addresses church leaders, scorns climate change deniers

Budapest (MTI) – Hungary’s President Janos Ader met church leaders in parliament on Tuesday for a conference to discuss climate change and environmental concerns.

Ader asked church dignitaries to share the imperative of saving the Earth in their religious communities, in the spirit of an encyclical letter from Pope Francis, which calls attention to shared global problems and the need for solidarity. He said denying climate change, feeling apathy on the subject and believing the market was almighty were all fallacies.

“Preventing an ecological disaster and stopping climate change is not about protecting a few species, as skeptics would like us to see it, but about saving humanity,” he said.

Parliamentary Speaker Laszlo Kover and Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen also addressed the event.
