Hungary guest nights up 5.6 pc in Jan-May, says hotel association

Budapest, July 26 (MTI) – The number of guest nights spent in Hungarian hotels rose by 5.6 percent over the first five months of the year, a report published on Sunday by the Association of Hungarian Hotels and Restaurants (MSZESZ) shows.

Guest nights spent by domestic tourists rose by an annual 8.2 percent to 2.81 million over the first five months, while guest nights by foreign visitors was up by 3.7 percent to 3.76 million, MSZESZ said. The guest nights spent in Budapest increased by 6.6 percent.

Guest nights spent at the Lake Balaton region fell by 5.3 percent, which MSZESZ attributed to a sharp fall in Russian and Ukrainian demand.

UK tourists accounted for the greatest increase in the number of guest nights spent with a 25 percent jump, followed by tourists from the US (a 13.3 percent increase) and Italians (up by 10.6 percent).

The average hotel occupancy rate was at 47.3 percent during the period, a 2-percentage point increase over last year.

Guest turnover increased to 112.6 billion forints (EUR 361.6m), at an annual rate of 9.2 percent.

The gross average room rate at hotels was 16,515 forints per night in January-May.

Spending at commercial accommodations using the SZEP recreation card, which is part of Hungary’s unified voucher system, came to 1.6 billion forints in May, up 6.2 percent from a year earlier.
