Romanian authorities exaggerate over the aspirations of the Hungarian community

The ActiveWatch Media Monitoring Agency, a Bucharest based human rights organization that militates for free communication for public interest, speak about an overreaction of the Romanian authorities towards the Hungarian community in their 2014 FreeEx Report.

They say in their report that while it is premature to talk about systematic actions towards the Hungarian community, there are many situations when the Romanian authorities tried with success to curb the right to free speech of the members of the Hungarian community in Romania. In their view, this fact makes the Hungarian community vulnerable to discriminatory acts from the Romanian authorities.

The report states that both the Romanian media and the authorities have an exaggerated reaction to the political aspirations of the Hungarian minority, especially when it comes to aspirations of the territorial autonomy of Szeklerland, considering these goals extremist, and thus stigmatize the subject, preventing a debate that should be normal in a democratic society.

The report also declares that Romanian law continues to leave space to abuse that the members of the Hungarian community are subjected to, especially when it comes to using national symbols (Szekler flag, national anthem). According to Active Watch, these laws are in contradiction with the freedom of expression, the freedom of conscience and are susceptible to create inter-ethnic tensions.
