1956 monument vandalised in Sopron

A monument commemorating Hungary’s 1956 anti-Soviet revolution has been vandalised in Sopron, in western Hungary, the local government said on Tuesday.
Unknown perpetrators are believed to have poured overnight white paint over the downtown monument erected on the revolution’s 60th anniversary last year, it said.
The local government has resolutely condemned the act.
The incident followed the vandalisation of another monument erected in the nearby village of Balf as a tribute to the Jewish forced labourers killed during WWII.
Investigations are under way, the Győr-Moson-Sopron county police said.
