Hungary, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania discuss South Corridor gas pipeline

Budapest (MTI) – Representatives of Hungary, Bulgaria, Greece and Romania held consultations concerning the South Corridor gas pipeline network in Athens on December 1, the Hungarian foreign ministry announced on Wednesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on the evening of December 1 that the South Stream pipeline project was being scrapped because of opposition in Europe.

After Russia’s decision on the South Stream pipeline Hungary must seek further possibilities to secure the country’s safe long-term energy supply, the ministry said.

Delivering gas arriving from Azerbaijan through the South Corridor to Central Europe has a special role among these possibilities, the ministry’s statement added.

The South Corridor is a realistic project that could be completed in the medium term, and it is viable from the financing point, the ministry said, adding that it involves linking the existing interconnectors and building the missing infrastructure rather than constructing one big pipeline.

The corridor enjoys the support of the European Union, the foreign ministry said, noting the special role of the Greek-Bulgarian-Romanian-Hungarian gas corridor in the diversification of EU resources.
