Stoiber: Hungary should be vocal in Brussels – TV

Budapest (MTI) – It is important that Hungary should make its voice heard in Brussels, Edmund Stoiber, former minister-president of Bavaria, said.

Not only large countries but those smaller than Hungary, such as Slovakia, Slovenia, Ireland and the Netherlands should also be vocal in the European Union and should be as strongly represented as other countries with larger populations, Stoiber told Hungarian public TV, which aired excerpts from a longer interview late on Sunday..

Stoiber urged more dialogue between Hungary and the EU, saying that Brussels often moves fast to express criticism towards Budapest.

The Hungarian government has taken steps to respond to proposals and fulfil requirements within the country’s legal framework most of the times, he said.

Stoiber, an honorary chairman of the Christian Social Union (CSU), described Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as a politician acting highly consistently, someone who strives to achieve his goals in his own separate way.

“To express opposite views is perfectly legitimate, but it is unacceptable that some sort of generalised accusations are directed against a democratically elected government, against the country itself,” he said.

Stoiber said he had supported Orban during elections and when he was in opposition, because “despite his tenacity and unpopular acts he is an important pillar with his clear-cut thinking and his voice in the European community of 28 states.”

The full interview will be broadcast on M1 channel on November 30, a thematic day for Germany.
