Billboard Campaign “Danke Ungarn” Launched in Germany

Budapest (MTI) – A billboard campaign thanking Hungary for opening its borders to East German citizens in 1989 was launched in Germany on Friday.

The campaign dubbed “Danke Ungarn” was organised first in Hungary in the summer by the German Embassy in cooperation with the German-Hungarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

The 1989 border opening was a turning point in the history of Europe, Germany and Hungary as well, Hungary’s economy minister told a press conference in Budapest, on the occasion of the campaign’s German launch.

Mutual trust between Hungary and Germany has triumphed over decades of oppression, said Mihaly Varga. Germany is Hungary’s major strategic partner, he noted.

There are some 6,000 fully or partly German-owned businesses operating in Hungary that employ more than 300,000 people, he said.

Germany has invested 6 billion euros in Hungary since 2010 and more than 50 German companies have built new plants or expanded their plant capacity, Varga added.

Under the campaign, 1,400 billboards have been posted in nine German cities, said Peter Farago, head of the Hungarian Tourism Zrt.
