Hungary expects Ukraine to guarantee Hungarian minority rights

Kiev, April 11 (MTI) – Hungary has provided substantial help to Ukraine and expects its eastern neighbour to guarantee the rights of ethnic Hungarians living on its territory, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in Kiev on Tuesday.

Accompanied by his Czech and Slovak counterparts Lubomir Zaoralek and Miroslav Lajcak, Szijjártó held talks with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin on support by the three Visegrad countries.

Hungary has spent billions of forints on supporting Ukraine and, within that, the Transcarpathian region inhabited by many ethnic Hungarians. In return, it expects the Ukrainian government to “stop hassling the Hungarian minority organisations and halt all initiatives curbing minority rights”, he said.

The three Visegrad countries reiterated their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and insisted that the Minsk agreement should be observed and implemented by all sides concerned so as to resolve the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine.
