Socialists call on election office to recount vote recommendations

(MTI) – The Socialist Party’s Roma division has called on the National Election Office (NVI) to recount recommendation slips for the Oct. 12 local and ethnic minority election.
The opposition party said in a statement that the EKE-MSZP Roma division was the only serious challenger to the ruling Fidesz-backed Lungo Drom party, and had collected 1,774 recommendations for its national list. The election office, however, qualified almost half of these as invalid.
The party turned to the Kuria, Hungary’s supreme court, with an appeal — immediately and in the way prescribed by law — yet the top court refused to approve a recount, the statement said, adding that unless the election office agreed to a recount a question mark would hang over its fairness and legitimacy.
