Gyurcsany: opposition either joins forces or dies

Budapest, August 27 (MTI) – Hungary’s left-of-centre democratic parties have the choice of either uniting and forming a Democratic Party or “political death”, Ferenc Gyurcsany, leader of the leftist Democratic Coalition (DK), has said.

The current election system forces a situation whereby the democratic parties must unite or face extinction, the one-time prime minister told Wednesday’s Nepszabadsag daily.

“The optimal ultimate goal is clear: establishing a uniform Democratic Party. But in view of the stumbling preparatory negotiations for the municipal elections and the alarmingly low degree of willingness to compromise, I think we are still very far from this,” he said.

If the election system stays the same, the left-of-centre parties will have to join forces for the 2018 general election, too, Gyurcsany said. As intermediate solutions, he mentioned a party union, a joint board, or looser forms of cooperation, such as permanent inter-party consultations as possible options.

“Make alliances, resist, develop programmes and primarily take care of one another — this is the task,” he said.
