4 days until the elections: ruling Fidesz’s website hacked
Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party on Wednesday said its website had been brought down by international hackers. Fidesz’s website has been hacked by unidentified perpetrators, rendering it inaccessible, the party said in a statement.
The attack has brought down one of Fidesz’s key communications channels right at the tail end of the campaign, “making it an obvious interference into the election”, the party said. “The left really is using every means possible to silence opinions that side with peace and security,” they added. The general election in Hungary will be held on April 3.
Joint opposition PM candidate Márki-Zay would review govt plans on EU resiliency funding
Péter Márki-Zay, the prime ministerial candidate of the united opposition, has sent a letter to European Union institutions pledging to review government plans on the use of the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF),
“to ensure that Hungary has access to as much of the funding as possible”.
Márki-Zay’s letter said he would protect EU resources from corruption if the opposition came to power after Sunday’s ballot, according to a statement on Wednesday by Socialist MEP István Újhelyi. “EU resources should be spent on reforms and social issues serving Hungary’s development rather than on the enrichment of the oligarchs linked to Prime Minister Viktor Orban,” Márki-Zay wrote.
RRF funding and resources from the EU’s 2021-2027 budget “are a unique opportunity to build a greener, socially fairer and digitally more prepared future for Hungary,”
he added. A government run by the current opposition would immediately move to join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) and demonstrate the new administration’s commitment to “taking steps against government-level corruption…”
Márki-Zay pledged to preserve fundamental European values such as the rule of law, press freedom, and judicial independence.
